AGiLA Pro Bono Legal Clinic
AGiLA ("Attorneys Giving Legal Advice") was established during March 2018 in partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS) as the first and only pro bono legal clinic in the Midwest dedicated to delivering efficient legal aid to clients of limited means, with targeted outreach to underserved members of the Filipino American community. Qualified low income clients are eligible to receive free legal assistance on matters involving elder law, wills and estates, family law, and landlord/tenant law. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, new client intake will be by appointment only. For more information, please contact Janice Dantes at janice@pinaylaw.com.
NEW PRO BONO OFFERING
POWERS OF ATTORNEY FOR HEALTHCARE FRONTLINERS
AND ESSENTIAL WORKERS
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AGiLA clinic has expanded to provide pro bono drafting of powers of attorney for healthcare frontliners and essential workers. Despite putting themselves at great personal risk every day on the job, a great number of these workers, especially those of immigrant backgrounds, have yet to determine how decisions about their own healthcare and property will be made in the event they are incapacitated. We recognize this may be a difficult conversation for many families and our volunteer attorneys are here to help make the process easier and less daunting.
What is a power of attorney?
A power of attorney is a legal document that allows a person to designate someone else (an agent) to act on their behalf for important decisions regarding property, finances, and healthcare. POAs are important because in the absence of such documents, a decisionmaker will instead be appointed by a judge sitting in guardianship court.

To take effect, POAs must be notarized. Walk-in notary services as well as additional opportunities for one-on-one client counseling will be available every third Saturday of the month at Instituto del Progreso Latino (2520 S. Western Ave. in Chicago) from 1-3pm:
